Art Within Videogames: It's On the Cards

Videogame art is commonplace, and we're very used to seeing it, whether it's box-art, character sketches inside the pages of an instruction manual for the game itself, or even collector's edition prints. However, there's also a lot of art to be found within videogames, and some of the best can be found in Final Fantasy's card decks.

If you're a Final Fantasy fan, you'll know that the series tends to feature minigames, and some of them involve cards, like FFVIII's Triple Triad, or FFIX's Tetra Master. Both are simple to learn, but hard to put down, each of them a complete game in their own right that demands your attention as much as the game these card games feature in.

Like poker or Magic: The Gathering, the cards are representative of a certain statistic, or type, and this helps you know how to use them and play them within the confines of the game's rules. However, it's important to note that they are different from an average card deck, in that they contain artwork unique to the in-game deck.

It's wonderful to see the incorporation of Magic-esque depictions of the various monsters of Final Fantasy within the game itself, and one of the joys of game art is that some pieces become very collectible, and this is reflected in the nature of a trading-card game within Final Fantasy.

We love to see the ability to collect art in games, and some games (like the Sims) take this idea even further. But in an RPG, it's a surprising occurance and one that we treasure, as big fans of the Final Fantasy attitude to world-building. Until then, we'll be playing Triple Triad and Tetra Master, so enjoy the art on the site, and in the games.
